Six Nations Update

So after the first round of matches the Mad4Sport predicted final table doesn't look quite as unlikely as when first posted! With England expecting a win against Italy next up, a finish in the top half of the table would appear realistic although with tough games to follow.
The Ireland v Wales match was a cracker albeit marred somewhat by Bradley Davies' dangerous tackle which warranted a straight red card. Wales now look set for a good run in the tournament having won in Dublin - no mean feat!
France however looked in fine form against Italy and will remain favourites for the title....at least for now.

Six Nations

At Mad4Sport we are all looking forward to the annual 6 Nations festival of rugby. The action begins on Saturday with the highlight being the clash at Murrayfield between Scotland and the "Auld Enemy" England.
Unusually Scotland start as favourites with the benefit of home advantage and a settled side while England must enter the hostile stadium with a largely new, inexperienced team under the captaincy of Harlequins Chris Robshaw (a man with just one cap to his name!).
We would love to know your thoughts/predictions for the tournament. Here's ours:

What fantastic coverage of the World Series Finals from Queen's Club last weekend on Sky Sports! The court in a pink/purple/black design looked terrific and made the white ball highly visible and easy to follow.
The squash itself was simply stunning with Nicole David victorious in the Ladies final against Madeline Perry while the "veteran" Amr Shabana triumphed over Gregory Gaultier in a compelling five set match full of unbelievable shots, retrieving and incident. More of this please Sky Sports!!

A most enjoyable afternoon for part of the Mad4Sport team was spent at the Twickenham Stoop Memorial Ground yesterday as Quins recorded their 13th consecutive win of the season against Newcastle Falcons. With a six try bonus point romp, Quins now sit nine points clear of the pack at the top of the Aviva Premiership although the match was pretty tight for most of the first half against a committed Falcons team.
Played under beautiful clear blue skies for the first half, the temperature noticeably dropped as daylight dwindled in the second although the pace of play certainly did not! We were very pleased to have remembered hats, scarves and gloves!

This afternoon Harlequins take on Bath at the Rec aiming to make it 10 wins out of 10 for the season! Looking at the line-ups the two teams seem fairly evenly matched, so perhaps home advantage will give Bath the edge and end the Quins' winning run?
However perhaps the pre-match remarks of Sam Vesty will fire up the away team to a famous win? Certainly Conor O' Shea will not need to motivate the team. He'll only need to pin up Vesty's comments on the noticeboard - job done!!
Last season I was able to attend this match and what a fabulous city Bath is! Very envious of the travelling Quins fans today as work prevents my attendance. Shall be checking the score regularly though!

What a great start to the season for the mighty Quins after yesterdays rout of Gloucester! With three wins out of three the team sit top of the Aviva Premiership! Unfortunately we had to miss the game yesterday owing to a colleague's wedding but by all accounts it was a great performance with six tries to enjoy and a Man of the Match performance from young Luke Wallace in the back row. Next up is Worcester away followed by Sale on October 1st at home (won't be missing that one!)

Roger Federer has just been knocked out of this years Wimbledon tournament in a five set thriller against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga! Premiership Final

Tomorrow sees the conclusion of the Aviva Rugby Premiership season with the final taking place between Leicester Tigers and Saracens. For the neutral, this is probably not the final that was hoped for with Tigers in yet another final (and therefore envied by many) and Saracens perceived to play a less attractive style of rugby (albeit effective).
It's difficult to pick a winner and in the end it may come down to whoever kicks their penalty opportunities most successfully and on this basis at mad4sport, we would probably go with the reliable boot of Tigers Toby Flood.

What a rollercoaster night on Friday. Unable to attend myself, I was forced to watch on TV while one of my sons was there at the Cardiff City Stadium to see Harlequins snatch (possibly a fortunate) victory against Stade Francais. So close to the celebrations at the end, he was virtually doused with champagne!!
What a result for the long-suffering Quins fans who have had to endure a turbulent trophyless few years with relegation, Bloodgate and any number of false dawns! Perhaps this is the result to help the team kick on to better things next year?
Very disappointed for Northampton Saints on Saturday who failed to win the Heineken Cup against Leinster in a real "game of two halves"

Harlequins in Amlin Final

Having stunned the mighty Munster in Limerick (inflicting only their seccond home European defeat in 16 years!), Harlequins finished the Aviva Premiership season in disappointing fashion with a scrappy home defeat to Saracens. Was not the most entertaining game of the season by any means and the day was not helped with the RFU arranging the annual Army/Navy match across the road at "Big" Twickenham at exactly the same time!! The traffic was horrendous and didn't help the mood!

However, next Friday evening (20th) in Cardiff, Quins will be hoping to recreate the form that despatched Munster when they play Stade Francais in the Amlin Challenge Cup Final. Here at M4S we cannot wait and are hoping Quins will pick up their first piece of silverware for several years. The opposition have been feared and respected in Europe for many years but are possibly not currently at their best. Quins have also beaten them twice in recent years so can they do it?

We say "YES". A narrow win for Quins with a last minute Nick Evans drop goal - you heard it here first!

Amlin Semi Final

The Mighty Quins travel to Ireland this weekend to face a nice, easy (Ha Ha!) game against Munster in the Amlin Challenge Cup Semi Final. The bookies give us virtually no chance in this one but who knows? After a decent win away at Leeds on Sunday, the team is playing well and despite some dismal away form this year it's still 15 versus 15 - maybe a shock is on the cards??
The biggest problem for me is that I've foolishly rota'd myself to work so can't watch it!!

Getting ready tonight to head West for a long weekend in Bath culminating in a first visit to the Rec - home of Bath Rugby, for what promises to be an exciting and competitive match between Bath and Harlequins at 2.15pm this Saturday. Weather forecast looks reasonably promising and with a fast, hard pitch and two attack-minded sides, a great spectacle could be in store.
Must remember to pack some extra tracksuit trousers and rugby shirts and my running shoes in case the impulse to tackle the hills around Bath prove compelling!

Champions League

How will the English clubs fare in Europe this week and next? Both ties involving English clubs look to be close and unlikely to be settled either way after the first legs. Spurs really need to get an away goal tonight against Real Madrid to give them a decent chance at White Hart Lane. I go 2-1 Madrid tonight.
Tomorrow's game at Stamford Bridge sees Chelsea host Manchester United. With little love lost between the clubs a tense, physical battle is likely which might just favour the Blues who have found a bit of form of late following their mid-season slump. I go 2-1 again with Chelsea taking a narrow advantage to Old Trafford for the return.

Amlin Cup Quarter Final

It's a big night for us at Mad4Sport this Friday as four of us head to the Twickenham Stoop for the quarter final match against local rivals London Pests (sorry, I mean Wasps!). Following the disappointment of the close defeat to Leicester Tigers on Saturday, the Quins will be focussed on securing a semi final berth against either Munster or Brive (albeit without local boy Joe Marler who has been suspended for two weeks following his David Haye impersonation in the said Tigers game!).
While Quins have been playing well recently, Wasps have been struggling and most observers are predicting a home win. However, I would not be so confident as Wasps have a terrific record in cup competition and for them it is probably their last chance of securing Heineken Cup rugby next season. I predict a fierce battle with a tight first 60 minutes before Quins strength pulls them through by seven points at the end. Could be the "Kiss of Death" though given my track record of predictions on this blog!

LV= Cup Semi Final

On Friday night at 8pm, Harlequins take on Newcastle Falcons in the LV= Cup semi final at the Twickenham Stoop. Four of us at http://www.mad4sport.net/ are attending this game, somewhat nervously following the heavy defeat inflicted on the Quins by the Falcons last Friday night in the Aviva Premiership.
Struggling with a major injury crisis (including talisman, Kiwi fly half Nick Evans) and international call-ups for Nick Easter and Danny Care, the Quins are down to the "bare bones" and will need to produce a much more disciplined performance to avoid giving the Falcons fly half the opportunity to display his penalty kicking prowess.
They will also need to produce a better performance at the set piece, having been dominated by the Falcons forwards especially at the line-out.
For anyone attending with a youngster who is nagging for a Quins shirt, we still have a few home harlequins replica shirts in junior sizes at an amazing £20 (less than half-price!)

Our prediction - a narrow win for Quins (heart rules the head!!_

With Andy Murray through to the semi-final and avoiding a clash with Rafa Nadal, interest in tennis is on the up. No doubt many of us will be tuning in to watch Murray's next game to see if he can make another Grand Slam Final. At Mad4sport, we feel that Murray will make the final but will fail to claim his first Grand Slam title but with our track record for predictions you might be advised to bet on the opposite!

PDC WORLD DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP

How exciting was the final last night between Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson? The first set in particular was amazing with ridiculous averages and a "nine-darter" from the eventual winner Lewis - well done to him. Darts fans will now turn their attention to the BDO version of the World Title, currently being broadcast on the BBC. Although the standard is perhaps not quite as high overall (although some would dispute this given that Scott Waites of the BDO recently won the cross code Grand Slam of darts tournament), there are still some tremendous players to watch and learn from. Our tips to win? Either the aforementioned Waites or Stuart Kellett - you heard it here first! Let us know what you think!

ouramazingrose.blogspot.com - humbling especially at this time of year. My 22 year old son was diagnosed with the same condition as Rose almost 10 years ago and fell into the lucky 10%. Many of the names and places in Rose's blog are known to me - how lucky, blessed and guilty do I feel having read about Rose's blog in yesterdays Sunday Telegraph? My heart goes out to Rose's family at this time.

TV Sport

With the current dreadful weather, sport is being badly affected with many postponements at the moment with dire results for us TV sports fanatics!!
We are planning to attend Big Game 3 at Twickenham on the 27th (Harlequins v London Irish) and are hoping that conditions improve. As I type, another fixture has been postponed in the Heineken Cup and Wasps are advising fans not to attend todays game at Wycombe but to watch on Sky.

One event still going ahead at the moment is the PDC World Darts Championships. The competition would appear to be more open than for a number of years as Phil Taylor has not enjoyed the best form over the last couple of months. However at Mad4Sport we still think he is the man to beat although "dark horse" tips would be Paul Nicholson (check out our great deal on his darts), Mark Webster and possibly Colin Osborne. What do you think?
